ואזל דוד מתמן ואשתיזיב למערת עדלם ושמעו אחוהי ובית אבוהי ונחתו לותיה לתמן:
lthmn lwthyh wnkhthw abwhy wbyth akhwhy wshmew edlm lmerth washthyzyb mthmn dwd wazl
David therefore departed from there and escaped to Adullam’s cave. When his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him.

ואתכנישו לותיה כל גבר מעיק רוח וכל גבר די ליה מרי רשו וכל גבר מריר נפש והוה עליהון לרבא והוו עמיה כארבע מאה גברא:
gbra mah karbe emyh whww lrba elyhwn whwh npsh mryr gbr wkl rshw mry lyh dy gbr wkl rwkh meyq gbr kl lwthyh wathknyshw
Everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered themselves to him; and he became captain over them. There were with him about four hundred men.

ואזל דוד מתמן למצפיא דמואב ואמר למלכא דמואב יפוק כען אבא ואמא עמכון עד דאידע מה יעביד לי יי:
yy ly yebyd mh dayde ed emkwn wama aba ken ypwq dmwab lmlka wamr dmwab lmtspya mthmn dwd wazl
David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come out to you, until I know what God will do for me.”

ואשרינון קדם מלכא דמואב ויתיבו עמיה כל יומין דהוה דוד מטמר במצודיא:
bmtswdya mTmr dwd dhwh ywmyn kl emyh wythybw dmwab mlka qdm washrynwn
He brought them before the king of Moab; and they lived with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.

ואמר גד נביא לדוד לא תתב במצודיא איתא ואזיל לך לארע יהודה ואזל דוד ואתא לחורשא דחרת:
dkhrth lkhwrsha watha dwd wazl yhwdh lare lk wazyl aytha bmtswdya ththb la ldwd nbya gd wamr
The prophet Gad said to David, “Don’t stay in the stronghold. Depart, and go into the land of Judah.” Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hereth.

ושמע שאול ארי אתידע דוד וגבריא די עמיה ושאול יתיב בגבעתא תחות אשלא ברמתא ומורניתיה בידיה וכל עבדוהי קימין עלוהי:
elwhy qymyn ebdwhy wkl bydyh wmwrnythyh brmtha ashla thkhwth bgbetha ythyb wshawl emyh dy wgbrya dwd athyde ary shawl wshme
Saul heard that David was discovered, with the men who were with him. Now Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him.

ואמר שאול לעבדוהי דקימין עלוהי שמעו כען בני שבטא דבית בנימין אף לכלכון יתן בר ישי חקלין וכרמין לכלכון ימני רבני אלפין ורבני מאותא:
mawtha wrbny alpyn rbny ymny lklkwn wkrmyn khqlyn yshy br ythn lklkwn ap bnymyn dbyth shbTa bny ken shmew elwhy dqymyn lebdwhy shawl wamr
Saul said to his servants who stood around him, “Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give everyone of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds?

ארי מרדתון כלכון עלי ולית דחוי לי כד גזר קים ברי עם בר ישי ולית דכאיב מנכון עלי ומחוי לי ארי אקים ברי ית עבדי עלי לכמנא כיומא הדין:
hdyn kywma lkmna ely ebdy yth bry aqym ary ly wmkhwy ely mnkwn dkayb wlyth yshy br em bry qym gzr kd ly dkhwy wlyth ely klkwn mrdthwn ary
Is that why all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one who discloses to me when my son makes a treaty with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as it is today?”

ואתיב דואג אדומאה והוא ממנא על עבדי שאול ואמר חזיתי ית בר ישי אתא לנוב לות אחימלך בר אחיטוב:
akhyTwb br akhymlk lwth lnwb atha yshy br yth khzythy wamr shawl ebdy el mmna whwa adwmah dwag wathyb
Then Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, answered and said, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

ושאיל ליה במימרא דיי וזודין יהב ליה וית חרבא דגלית פלשתאה יהב ליה:
lyh yhb plshthah dglyth khrba wyth lyh yhb wzwdyn dyy bmymra lyh wshayl
He inquired of Yahweh for him, gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”

ושלח מלכא למקרי ית אחימלך בר אחיטוב כהנא וית כל בית אבוהי כהניא די בנוב ואתו כלהון לות מלכא:
mlka lwth klhwn wathw bnwb dy khnya abwhy byth kl wyth khna akhyTwb br akhymlk yth lmqry mlka wshlkh
Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob; and they all came to the king.

ואמר שאול שמע כען בר אחיטוב ואמר הא אנא רבוני:
rbwny ana ha wamr akhyTwb br ken shme shawl wamr
Saul said, “Hear now, you son of Ahitub.” He answered, “Here I am, my lord.”

ואמר ליה שאול למה מרדתון עלי את ובר ישי במתנך ליה מזון וחרבא ושאלית ליה במימרא דיי למיקם עלי לכמנא כיומא הדין:
hdyn kywma lkmna ely lmyqm dyy bmymra lyh wshalyth wkhrba mzwn lyh bmthnk yshy wbr ath ely mrdthwn lmh shawl lyh wamr
Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as it is today?”

ואתיב אחימלך ית מלכא ואמר ומן בכל עבדך כדוד מהימן וחתנא דמלכא ורב על משמעתך ויקיר בביתך:
bbythk wyqyr mshmethk el wrb dmlka wkhthna mhymn kdwd ebdk bkl wmn wamr mlka yth akhymlk wathyb
Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, “Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, captain of your body guard, and honored in your house?

יומא דין שריתי למשאל ליה במימרא דיי חס לי לא ישוי מלכא בעבדיה פתגמא בכל בית אבא ארי לא ידע עבדך בכל דא פתגם זעיר או רב:
rb aw zeyr pthgm da bkl ebdk yde la ary aba byth bkl pthgma bebdyh mlka yshwy la ly khs dyy bmymra lyh lmshal shrythy dyn ywma
Have I today begun to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me! Don’t let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.”

ואמר מלכא ממת תמות אחימלך את וכל בית אבוך:
abwk byth wkl ath akhymlk thmwth mmth mlka wamr
The king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house.”

ואמר מלכא לרהטיא דקימין עלוהי אסתחרו וקטלו כהניא דיי ארי אף ידיהון עם דוד וארי ידעו ארי עריק הוא ולא חוו לי ולא אבו עבדי מלכא לאושטא ית ידיהון למשלט בכהניא דיי:
dyy bkhnya lmshlT ydyhwn yth lawshTa mlka ebdy abw wla ly khww wla hwa eryq ary ydew wary dwd em ydyhwn ap ary dyy khnya wqTlw asthkhrw elwhy dqymyn lrhTya mlka wamr
The king said to the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of Yahweh, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled and didn’t disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king wouldn’t put out their hand to fall on the priests of Yahweh.

ואמר מלכא לדואג אסתחר את ושלוט בכהניא ואסתחר דואג אדומאה ושלט הוא בכהניא וקטל ביומא ההוא תמנן וחמשא גברין דכשרין למלבש אפוד דבוץ:
dbwts apwd lmlbsh dkshryn gbryn wkhmsha thmnn hhwa bywma wqTl bkhnya hwa wshlT adwmah dwag wasthkhr bkhnya wshlwT ath asthkhr ldwag mlka wamr
The king said to Doeg, “Turn and attack the priests!” Doeg the Edomite turned, and he attacked the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five people who wore a linen ephod.

וית נוב קרית כהניא קטל לפתגם דחרב מגבר ועד אתתא מעולים ועד יניק ותור וחמר ואימר לפתגם דחרב:
dkhrb lpthgm waymr wkhmr wthwr ynyq wed mewlym aththa wed mgbr dkhrb lpthgm qTl khnya qryth nwb wyth
He struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword—both men and women, children and nursing babies, and cattle, donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

ואשתיזיב ברא חדא לאחימלך בר אחטוב ושמיה אביתר וערק בתר דוד:
dwd bthr werq abythr wshmyh akhTwb br lakhymlk khda bra washthyzyb
One of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.

וחוי אביתר לדוד ארי קטל שאול ית כהניא דיי:
dyy khnya yth shawl qTl ary ldwd abythr wkhwy
Abiathar told David that Saul had slain Yahweh’s priests.
22
ואמר דוד לאביתר ידענא ביומא ההוא ארי תמן דואג אדומאה ארי חואה יחוי לשאול אנא גרמית לאסתקפא בכל נפש בית אבוך:
abwk byth npsh bkl lasthqpa grmyth ana lshawl ykhwy khwah ary adwmah dwag thmn ary hhwa bywma ydena labythr dwd wamr
David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of all the persons of your father’s house.
